Life Experiences
Mobile home. Mobile studio.
The Bus
Many good stories start with a disaster. Way back in 2009, my life fell apart. I lost my job, my house and my relationship - and all at the same time.
Life, it seemed though, had other plans for me and was about to set me on an epic journey of self discovery, creativity and connection.
This journey began in the form of a beautiful green 508 diesel Mercedes bus. She became my home, transport, studio and friend for the next two years.
Life went from dismal to epic almost overnight and although it was still a time of healing and reflection, I strongly believe that my time spent in nature facilitated a much speedier recovery.
More importantly, it awakened my creativity and a need to express and convey the gap between reality and imagination.
Nature had become my teacher and my muse...
A Little Slice of Heaven.
The Yurt
Having spent two years in the bus, it was time for a change. I desperately wanted to continue living in a similar way, but this time, even closer to nature.
Life obliged and presented me with the opportunity of living in a yurt in Devon for a year and this beautiful little dwelling became my home and studio for the next four seasons.
My days were spent feverishly painting and of course exploring the local countryside. My evenings were spent watching the stars through the crown and sketching cartoons to the crackle of the wood-burning stove.
My connection to nature did indeed deepen and I poured it into my work, hoping to find a way to capture the stillness and energy of the landscapes that surrounded me.
Gradually, as the yurt filled up with canvases swinging from the ceiling by trouser hooks, the first signs of my own style began to emerge.
Again, the winds of change began to blow...
The Nomadic Artist
The Van
My days in the yurt drew to a close and I found myself relocated to Dorset where I spent four challenging but enriching years living on a beautiful estate, working tirelessly to hone my craft.
During this time, I bought an old 4WD Mitsubishi Delica and took to the open road on the weekends in search of trees, rivers and mountains to gather inspiration and 'plug back in'.
The most epic trip being the North Coast 500, where I travelled from Dorset to the west coast of Scotland, hugging the west coast up to the turquoise waters of the North Shore and then scuttling south through the lowlands.
I camped in a tent by the side of the van, accompanied by a tarp canopy suspended from the roof-rack and then staked to the ground.
Those years were a blissful marriage of my twin passions - creativity and camping.
In Cosy Covid Comfort.
The Caravan
As Cloud Covid loomed and loitered, it caught me in the middle of a move back to Hampshire.
As it happened, when I was living in Dorset, I had bought a third-hand German caravan with the intention of towing my home and studio behind my van, but as it turned out caravaning wasn't for me.
It did turn out however that a caravan was the perfect self-isolating solution, so for two years I hibernated and waited and waited...
The wheels of the world had stopped and so in turn had my painting, so I turned my hand to decorating and cracked on.
By now, I just wanted to live outdoors. I wanted to visit new places and have experiences in new environments, channelling my experiences onto canvas.
Life had yet another couple of additional surprises and challenges up her sleeve and they all seemed to suggest that I should continue my creative work.
The Journey Continues...
Present
The Universe sure works in mysterious ways. Yet again, I have found myself living surrounded by the most stunning countryside on the edge of the New Forest in Wiltshire.
My creative journey has been rekindled and I have refuelled my passion for painting landscapes and camping as much as possible again.
Being a long time camping nerd and general outdoor enthusiast, I have over the years acquired a variety of tents and it seems as fitting a time as ever to now use them as much as possible.
Recently I made a return trip to Nant Gwynant in Snowdonia, Wales, where I pitched on the stunning shoreline of Llyn Dinas. I look forward to creating a painting from this experience.
If you've made it this far, thank you sincerely. I hope you feel inspired to get out there, to connect, to clear your mind and to feel the rumblings of your own 'calling'.
Only when it's quiet, can you hear the whisper of your soul's purpose.
As daylight wanes, I switch from painting to sketching. I work on illustrative projects in the evenings, which are now products available to you in my Gift Shop. Each purchase aids in funding future trips and art supplies. Your support is greatly appreciated.
